Debt Consolidation Loans: When They Make Sense

Debt consolidation rolls multiple debts — credit cards, medical bills, other loans — into a single monthly payment, ideally at a lower interest rate. It can simplify your finances, but it's not the right move for everyone.

The math is straightforward: if your consolidation loan's APR is lower than the weighted average of your current debts, you'll save money. If it's not, consolidation just rearranges your debt without reducing it.

When Consolidation Makes Sense

  • You're paying high-interest credit card debt (15–25%+ APR) and can qualify for a personal loan at 8–15%
  • You have multiple monthly payments and want to simplify to one
  • Your credit score has improved since you took on the original debt, qualifying you for better rates
  • You have a clear plan to avoid running up new balances on the cards you're paying off

When It Doesn't

  • The consolidation loan has a longer term that results in more total interest — even if the rate is lower
  • You'd need to use a secured loan (risking your home or car) to get an acceptable rate
  • The root issue is spending habits, not interest rates — consolidation without behavioral change often leads to more debt

How to Calculate If It's Worth It

List every debt you'd consolidate: the balance, interest rate, and minimum payment. Calculate the total you'd pay over each debt's remaining term. Then compare that sum to the total repayment on the consolidation loan (principal + all interest + any origination fees).

If the consolidation total is lower and you can handle the monthly payment comfortably, it's likely a good move.

Watch Out For

Origination fees (1–8% of the loan amount), which get deducted upfront. A $10,000 loan with a 5% origination fee only puts $9,500 in your hands. Factor this into your comparison.

Also check whether your existing debts have prepayment penalties — paying them off early with a consolidation loan could trigger extra charges.

Debt consolidation can lower your monthly payment, but check the total cost over the full term before committing.
